Beaufort B. Longest, Jr., PhD |
He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the Academy of Management, the Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy, American Public Health Association, and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. He has the unusual distinction of having been elected to membership in the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society in Business as well as in the Delta Omega Honor Society in Public Health. Among recent honors, he is happiest with his selection last year as the recipient of the American College of Healthcare Executives' Regents Award, "because it reflects an impact on the world of health care policy and management practice." Beaufort B. Longest, Jr., joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. He was recruited from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management to serve as the first director of Pitt's Health Policy Institute. Under his leadership, the Institute's programs of research and education have benefited many health care decision makers, as well as students preparing for careers in health policy and management. A distinguished academic career precedes Dr. Longest's appointment as the inaugural holder of the M. Allen Pond Chair in Health Policy and Management, an endowed chair established for the Health Policy Institute's director. Dr. Longest's research has generated more than $7.6 million in grant support, resulting in sixty articles, many of them published in leading referred journals such as the Academy of Management Review, Health Care Management Review, Journal of Health Policy, Politics and Law, and Journal of Healthcare Management. He has also authored, co-authored, or edited nine books and twenty-two chapters in other books. Reflecting his abiding commitment to teaching, Dr. Longest has written textbooks for the courses he teaches. Managing Health Services Organizations and Systems, 4th edition, and Health Policymaking in the United States, revised for the third time, have served not only his students but students across the United States and beyond. These books are among the most widely used textbooks in graduate health policy and management programs in the nation. The management book is also extensively used in Canada, Great Britain and the Czech Republic, and is being translated and published in China. Dr. Longest's recent research has focused on modeling managerial competence and on issues of governance in health care organizations. His model of managerial competence, presented at the International Conference on Competence-Based Management in Oslo, Norway, was published in Advances in Applied Business Strategy. His writing on the civic roles of health care organizations has influenced leaders in these organizations in thinking about their full range of responsibilities to the communities they serve. This work has also provided him the opportunity to become involved in the development of the UPMC Health System's groundbreaking Department of Community Initiatives. Professor Longest consults with health care organizations, universities, associations and government agencies on health policy and management issues. |
