HPI Structure

Located in the Department of Health Policy & Management of the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh to ensure an objective, community-oriented perspective in its work, HPI is guided by an Advisory Group comprised of foundation, business, healthcare, community, and university leaders. Grants from organizations represented by Advisory Group members and direct support from GSPH's Department of Health Policy & Management make possible HPI's work.

HPI pursues its mission to enhance health in the Pittsburgh region by improving healthcare decisionmaking through a variety of interrelated activities. The specific mix of activities varies according to the Advisory Group's assessment of the most productive use of resources.   HPI's staff includes Beaufort B. Longest, M. Allen Pond Professor of Health Policy and Management, as Director, Samuel A. Friede, Director, Governance Initiative and Linda S. Kalcevic, Administrator. The small professional staff is augmented by university faculty and students and by the use of selected consultants. At present, HPI's key activities include:

Governance Initiative
HPI's Governance Initiative was developed in response to the increasingly difficult challenges facing those who govern the region's healthcare organizations.  The initiative features briefings on topics of interest to governing board members and executives and provides opportunities for leaders of local health care organizations to share their case experiences in governance improvement.

Analyses & Conceptualizations/ Publications/Presentations & Speeches
HPI supports health care decisionmakers through analyses and conceptualizations of the issues and options they face, and by communication of this information through related publications and presentations.  HPI continues to track structural changes in the region's healthcare system, regularly updating and distributing its descriptive Simplified Guide to the Pittsburgh/Allegheny County Health Care Market.

Collaborations
HPI undertakes a variety of collaborative and participatory activities through which its impact is extended. Among the most important of these is a long-running collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh’s Institute of Politics. In addition, important collaborations occur with the Center for Bioethics and Health Law, Center for Minority Health, and others. HPI and the Institute of Politics co-sponsor an annual seminar on a health topic for elected officials.

Academic Involvement
HPI has stimulated and facilitated increased attention to health policy and management throughout the University, especially in its schools of business, law, medicine, and public health.
HPI staff participates in University of Pittsburgh academic programs as faculty members.
